Near the town of Gaya (later Bodhgaya), Shakyamuni Buddha sat under what was called a pipal tree and entered meditation. There he attained enlightenment, and the pipal tree later became known as the Bodhi Tree.

The seeds from Bodhi trees have been used to make malas, and remind us Buddha’s journey to enlightenment.

Bodhi is a Sanskrit word meaning enlightenment. Malas are prayer beads used for counting mantra recitations, with long malas such as these containing 108 beads.
